چکیده

We study the containment, satisfiability, and validity problems for conjunctive queries over trees with respect to a schema. We show that conjunctive query containment and validity are 2EXPTIMEcomplete w.r.t. a schema (DTD or Relax NG). Furthermore, we show that satisfiability for conjunctive queries w.r.t. a schema can be decided in NP. The problem is NP-hard already for queries using only one kind of axis. Finally, we consider conjunctive queries that can test for equalities and inequalities of data values. Here, satisfiability and validity are decidable, but containment is undecidable, even without schema information. On the other hand, containment w.r.t. a schema becomes decidable again if the “larger” query is not allowed to use both equalities and inequalities.

Exchange-Repairs: Managing Inconsistency in Data Exchange

In a data exchange setting with target constraints, it is often the case that a given source instance has no solutions. Intuitively, this happens when data sources contain inconsistent or conflicting information that is exposed by the target constraints at hand. In such cases, the semantics of target queries trivialize, because the certain answers of every target query over the given source ins...

View Synthesis from Schema Mappings

In data management, and in particular in data integration, data exchange, query optimization, and data privacy, the notion of view plays a central role. In several contexts, such as data integration, data mashups, and data warehousing, the need arises of designing views starting from a set of known correspondences between queries over different schemas. In this paper we deal with the issue of a...

Schema-Agnostic Query Rewriting in SPARQL 1.1

SPARQL 1.1 supports the use of ontologies to enrich query results with logical entailments, and OWL 2 provides a dedicated fragment OWL QL for this purpose. Typical implementations use the OWL QL schema to rewrite a conjunctive query into an equivalent set of queries, to be answered against the non-schema part of the data. With the adoption of the recent SPARQL 1.1 standard, however, RDF databa...

Optimizing Reformulation-based Query Answering in RDF

Reformulation-based query answering is a query processing technique aiming at answering queries under constraints. It consists of reformulating the query based on the constraints, so that evaluating the reformulated query directly against the data (i.e., without considering any more the constraints) produces the correct answer set. In this paper, we consider optimizing reformulation-based query...

Vertically Acyclic Conjunctive Queries over Trees

Seeking a manageable subclass of conjunctive queries over trees that would reach beyond tree patterns, we find that vertical acyclicity of queries is sufficient to guarantee the same complexity bounds for static analysis problems, as those enjoyed by tree patterns.
